| The Lions Schools Programme
|
This project was conceived
when Lion Lali Sokhi and Lion Ravi Sokhi were approached
by the village elders to provide them with a permanent place for school.
They stressed for a Nursery School that will help the needy children
with a good start of education. The Nursery School would house children
from 9 neighbouring villages. The ‘Needy Children’ were
from the families who could not afford to send their children to school
in town centers. It was emphasized that a village school would have
to be affordable in terms of both travel expenses and school fees. Some
of these children would probably not even be able to afford a school
uniform or textbooks.
After much persuasion
from the village elders, we decided to donate the use of a piece of
land we had inherited in the village. The objective was to build a Nursery
School in place of a derelict property in the village of Nurpur, India.
The project cost was assessed to cost about 15,000 pounds. With good
support of fellow lions, friends and the general public, the project
started . Funds were raised by organized dinners, dances
and other events.
The school began as Lions Nurpur Public School, with just 8 students and today we have more than 140 students
and many enquiries are being received daily. We are confident that this
school will be overwhelmed in time to come. This school in a remote
village is one of a kind. It has all the necessary facilities for not
only the young children of the village but the teenagers too in that
we are also providing computer training and english language for those
who wish to practice it further. At present we proudly provide education
for pre-nursery, nursery, LKG, UKG, Classes 1,2,3,4,5 and 6th. The Lions Nurpur Public School has now become Godiva Lions Coventry Public School.
After the enquiries we
have had, we feel that we could do better in the times ahead. We would be grateful
to all the Lions for their further support to progress for better as
we want the students of this school to be good in english. We encourage the
practice of english language for the betterment of our next generation
as english is an international or Global language.
We are encouraging parents
also to use the facilities provided by the school. Parents can come
to the school in their free hours to learn english language and computers
etc.In the leisure time the students of the school are sent to the village to do the community work which can make them learn to imbibe the social values better.
A big thanks and gratitude
goes out to all, for their support in seeing this project to its fruition.
